The Urbès Tunnel is an important place of memory in the High Vosges area of Alsace. The original project was a bold one: that of joining two vallées by “piercing” the Vosges. It was abandoned for financial reasons in 1935. The Second World War broke out shortly afterwards. The unfinished tunnel was a good hiding place and was used by Germany in 1943 for its weapons factories. It then quickly became one of the 70 concentration camps that were annexed to Natzwiller-Struthof Camp. Today you can see the entrance to the tunnel and its history through a discovery trail.
